Why does my car key need to be "programmed"?
Since 2001, It has been law in Australia that all new vehicles were to be fitted with factory immobilisers.
All car keys since then have what’s called a “transponder” in the head of the key. This communicates with the engines computer and tells the car that it’s ok to start. Without this chip, the car won’t start at all!
